The Girls in Maritime Affiliation Caribbean (WiMAC) performed a Regional Convention and sixth Annual Basic Assembly underneath the theme, “Navigating Horizons: Mobilizing Stronger Networks for Caribbean Girls in direction of a Sustainable Maritime Business.”
This dynamic, empowering and informative convention introduced collectively members affectionately known as SEAsters from roughly 15 nations throughout the Caribbean. It was held from the third – fifth October 2023, on the Convention Centre of Ocean Coral Spring Resort, Trelawny, Jamaica.
Incoming WiMAC President Dr. Evette Smith Johnson commented “the Caribbean Sea isn’t what separates us, it’s what binds us collectively, we’ll develop as SEAsters, from power to power.”
The newly elected WiMAC Governing Council consists of the President – Dr. Evette Smith Johnson (Jamaica), Instant Previous President – Mrs. Tamara Lowe- James (Dominica), Vice President, Analysis and Improvement- Ms. Suzette Balkaran (Trinidad and Tobago), Director of Finance -Ms. Ilaisa Lila (Suriname), Vice President, Public Relations and Advertising – Mrs. Tricia King (St. Kitts and Nevis), Vice President, Membership- Ms. Abigail Bryan (Jamaica), Member-At-Giant, – Ms. Carlita Benjamin ( Dominica ), Director of Company Affairs- Ms. Raquel Forbes (Jamaica), Vice President, Girls and Improvement –Mrs. Katina Benn (Guyana), and the Operations Supervisor – Ms Valerie Simpson (Jamaica).
The WiMAC Convention hosted 80 members together with the newly launched (twenty eighth September – World Maritime Day) Scholar Chapter on the Caribbean Maritime College, Jamaica. The members solely Annual Basic Assembly had representatives from: Aruba, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Belize, Curacao, Dominica, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago.
The keynote speaker was Mrs. Eva Lewis, Director of Citi Jamaica and a St. Lucia nationwide. She challenged a captivated viewers to redefine “Community” specializing in purposefulness, the worth of mentorship and being susceptible. It was awe-inspiring and empowering.
The Worldwide Maritime Group (IMO) has facilitated the creation {of professional} networks to enhance gender stability within the transport trade. Underneath IMO’s auspices, eight WIMAs have been established together with WiMAC. The Maritime Authority Jamaica hosted the 2023 WiMAC Convention and AGM.
