The Brooklyn-based Grenadian-American Ex-Academics’ Affiliation introduced awards to 10 college students who participated within the group’s essay and poetry-writing contests on Saturday, Sept. 14, as a part of Grenada’s fiftieth Anniversary of Independence celebrations.
The award ceremony, which passed off on the Nutmeg Home on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn, was held underneath the auspices of Grenada New York Consul Common Raphael M. Brizan.
Mickalia Forrester, Miss Grenada USA, introduced the awards to the scholars.
Recipients of awards for the Essay Contest have been Shamar James Anderson, 17, Archer Excessive College, Lawrenceville, GA; Justin C. McIntosh,16, College for Courses Excessive College, Brooklyn; Josiah Henry, 15, Brooklyn School Academy; Elliya Younger, 15, St. Joseph’s Convent, St. George’s, Grenada; and Jaelen Padilla, 17, Cristo Rey Excessive College.
College students who obtained awards for poetry have been: Jamel Tyler Garrett, 12, Lennox Academy; Jelani Francique, 12, Junior Excessive, Brooklyn; Jaeden Padilla, 12, I.S. 68 Bildersee; Kurleen Want, 12, The Anglican Excessive College, St. George’s, Grenada; and Chyenne Forrester, 13, Turtle Neck Center College, Uniondale, NY.
Most Grenadian college students residing in New York have been current to obtain their awards.
Cecily Mason, president of the Grenadian-American Ex-Academics’ Affiliation, instructed Caribbean Life that it was the primary time the scholars have been “given a possibility to study their ancestry and what independence means to their island nation.”
She counseled the scholars for his or her “unbelievable abilities and dedication,” stating they have been “optimistic alerts to the wonderful journey forward.”
Mason stated the contests have been the “brainchild” of members, “citing the thought that every one celebrations of independence are primarily dances, calypso competitions, or different types of revelry, the place the youth are at all times not noted.

Brizan additionally complimented Mason and the Affiliation for organizing the contests and lauded the scholars and their dad and mom “to allow them to perform the method.”
