The Caribbean Movie Collection (CFS) returns to the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) with a two-day movie lineup of introspective function size and quick movies that discover deep legacies, and disrupts locations of being and cinematic storytelling.
In line with the Luminal Theater, CFS October begins with “Mafifa” by Cuban filmmaker Daniela Muñoz Barroso on Friday, Oct. 6, at 7pm.
Within the documentary, the hearing-impaired director searches for the enigmatic Mafifa, a legendary feminine participant of the campana (bell), a conga music instrument she used to usually magnetize viewers members, who died younger over 40 years in the past.
“Mafifa” is preceded by Lesley Metal and Emily Packer’s “By Manner of Canarsie”, an exploration of the neighborhood’s distinctive relationship to its shoreline by recreation, temporary encounters, and an expressive use of analog movie.
“The filmic journey permits an understanding of this predominantly Black neighborhood’s shared needs for recognition and respect,” the Luminal Theater stated.
It stated CFS day two on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 4:30pm, is “devoted to standout Caribbean Diasporic quick movies that discover questions associated to migration and Diasporic being.
The Luminal Theater stated the lineup options works from NYC-based filmmakers together with Jason R.A. Foster’s “In Search of…Pregame”, a heart-warming father and little one relationship exploration by basketball, and Cristine Brache’s surprising “Morning Illness In The USA”.
Talkbacks are scheduled to observe every movie. Each days of screenings happen at BAM, 30 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217.
Now in its eighth yr, the Caribbean Movie Collection is an ongoing program of Third Horizon, The Luminal Theater, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
