PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Senior Counsel Deborah Peake has been appointed by appearing Chief Justice Nolan Bereaux as chairman of the three-member state of emergency (SoE) tribunal.
Two different senior attorneys, Ian Benjamin, SC, and Lee Merry, SC, have been appointed members. On Friday, the Judiciary introduced the appointment by the use of an e-mail to the media of a gazetted discover dated January 2 and signed by Bereaux.
The tribunal’s objective is to overview complaints by these arrested and detained below the SoE rules. If an individual is arrested in accordance with the rules, his/her constitutional rights to use for and be granted bail are eliminated.
The tribunal was set as much as hear the complaints of detained individuals and decide whether or not they need to be launched. The SoE was invoked to counter threats to public security and disruptions to important companies.
