It’s not day-after-day Caribbean folks get to jam to a Trinidad & Tobago violinist enjoying calypso and reggae. Sure, that’s proper, “violin enjoying kaiso”.
However André J. Donawa did exactly that final Saturday at a well-attended live performance in Scarborough. The younger violinist lived as much as his billing by “electrifying” the viewers with a repertoire that went from pop to reggae to calypso. And in Donawa’s phrases, “Calypso is the roots”.
The patrons lapped it up, danced and crowded the ground at each alternative as Ossie Gurley and his band, “The Reality”, saved the vibe going.
