    New York Attorney General’s office adds Director of Muslim Affairs to the team

    New York Legal professional Normal Letitia James introduced that the Workplace of the Legal professional Normal (OAG) has expanded its workforce to incorporate a first-ever Director of Muslim Affairs.

    Lengthy Island resident Mohammad Awais formally began the position on Dec. 6, 2024. On this place, Awais will work with Muslim communities throughout New York, handle their wants, and join them with OAG’s varied assets on civil rights, housing, employees’ rights, shopper safety, and extra.

    “New York is house to one of many largest Muslim communities within the nation, and I’m proud to welcome the Workplace of the Legal professional Normal’s first-ever Director of Muslim Affairs to work with Muslim communities throughout the state,” stated AG James. “From Buffalo to Brooklyn, Muslim communities throughout the state have grown over time and contribute meaningfully to our neighborhoods, as they’ve carried out for generations. This new position will assist my workplace be sure that Muslim New Yorkers’ voices are heard, their wants are met, and their rights are protected.”

    The brand new position, created by James, comes at a time when Islamophobia and anti-Arab hate is on the rise. This place is a part of the OAG’s Intergovernmental Affairs workforce, which focuses on connecting with New York’s numerous communities, together with Latino, Jewish, Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI), and LGBTQ+ communities.

    The position will develop upon the Legal professional Normal’s current work with Muslim communities; James has held and attended city halls, iftars, and different group occasions for New York’s Muslim communities.
