Caribbean Ministers accountable for the United Nations Conference to Fight Desertification and Drought (UNCCD) convene in The Bahamas from August 8-9.
The assembly goals to formulate and focus on methods to realize Land Degradation Neutrality amongst member states. Moreover, it should function a Preparatory Convention of Events, forward of the sixteenth session of the Convention of Events (COP16) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from December 2 to 13.
Determination 4 of the first Session of the first Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Administration’s Ministerial Council, has mandated the Secretariat to arrange a PRE-COP assembly. Throughout a bilateral assembly between The Bahamas and the Govt Director of PISLM, it was agreed that The Bahamas would host the Caribbean’s UNCCD Pre-COP assembly.
Govt Director of PISLM, Calvin James, noting the devastation skilled by Caribbean Small Island Growing States (CSIDS) from Hurricane Beryl, posited the Pre-COP offers a platform for Ministers to, “Advance the efforts that may enhance Land Degradation Neutrality by crafting insurance policies that may information the negotiations at COP16.”
Whereas the PISLM continues to assist Caribbean Small Island Growing States (CSIDS) to meet their obligations together with the event of Nationwide Motion Programmes for sustainable land administration, Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) Goal Setting Programmes (TSP), PRAIS studies, and the implementation of varied programmes and tasks to mitigate and adapt to land and soil degradation; the fact exists that extra have to be performed.
“Regardless of these efforts, the way forward for our land stays in danger as we’re degrading 100 million hectares of wholesome and productive lands every year. Our soils—which take tons of of years to kind—are being depleted in a matter of minutes. Droughts are hitting tougher and extra regularly, with our residents feeling the brunt of the impacts,” he added.
This Pre- COP will allow CSIDS to solidify their collective stance on crucial points akin to sand and dirt storms, drought, and different thematic areas forward of the United Nations Conference to Fight Desertification (UNCCD) COP16. The discussion board will present Leaders with the chance to debate the vulnerabilities and mandatory modifications for mitigation and adaptation, notably SIDS, whose economies are closely depending on climate-vulnerable sectors akin to agriculture, tourism, and fisheries, and which have restricted adaptive capability.
