    Brooklyn DA hosts annual Black History Month celebration – Caribbean Life

    The Brooklyn District Lawyer’s Workplace on Saturday hosted its annual Black Historical past Month celebration on the Brooklyn Museum with a dialogue about artwork, historical past and social justice.

    The packed occasion befell on the American Artwork Galley, that includes a dialog between artist Leroy Campbell and Dr. Myrah Brown-Inexperienced, a professor at Medgar Evers School and the founding father of Voices of Artwork.     All through Black Historical past Month, the Brooklyn District Lawyer’s Workplace stated it’s highlighting influential African American figures in legislation, such because the late Ken Thompson, Brooklyn’s first Black District Lawyer, who had championed equal justice.

    “Brooklyn particularly has been dwelling to an array of outstanding Black artists whose abilities have transcended boundaries and genres –from Lena Horne to Jay-Z, Jean-Michel Basquiat to Spike Lee.

    “All through historical past, Black artists have used their abilities to focus on injustice, handle social points, encourage change, and produce communities collectively,” he added.

    Gonzalez additionally famous the continued partnership his workplace has established with the Brooklyn Museum, which runs a profitable various to incarceration program for these arrested for sure minor offenses.

    “This isn’t nearly avoiding prosecution; it’s about transformation,” he stated. “It’s about how artwork can open doorways to new views, encourage self-reflection, and foster a way of duty.”
