The New York-based American Basis for The College of the West Indies (AFUWI) says it teed up a profitable mixture of philanthropy, sport, and Caribbean tradition at its Gaming for Good Charity Golf Match on June 20, elevating important funds to help scholarships for financially-challenged college students pursuing tertiary training at The College of the West Indies (UWI).
Ann-Marie Grant, AFUWI’s Jamaican-born govt director, informed Caribbean Life on Wednesday, Jul. 2, that the event, held at Brooklyn’s scenic Marine Park Golf Course, introduced collectively 62 golfers and quite a few board sport fans for “a day of vigorous competitors and neighborhood involvement.
“The occasion promotes AFUWI’s mission to extend entry to increased training throughout the Caribbean by funding tuition scholarships for academically gifted college students who lack the monetary means,” Grant stated.
She stated the foursome of Duane Nicholson, Emile and Orville Sudlow, and Mesco Joseph clinched first place with a commanding 10-under-par rating, narrowly edging out runners-up James Gant, Terry Jackson, Charles Wilson, and Jessie Perkins at 8-under.
Grant stated “lighthearted honors” included the Trustworthy Golfer Award, claimed by Patrick Lespinasse, Robert Atkinson, Clive Williams, and Edison Bramble, “who embraced the spirit of the sport with good humor and a +2 end.”
Standout performances included: Stacy Rose – Girls Closest to the Pin, Gap #5 (43 inches); Charles Wilson – Males’s Closest to the Pin, Gap #17 (7 ft, 7 inches); and Emile Sudlow and Sharon Bailey – Longest Drive winners.
Past the fairways, Grant stated company loved pleasant video games of dominoes, Ludo, and Scrabble — a nod to beloved Caribbean pastimes — and sampled culinary delights from main sponsors, together with Caribbean Meals Delights (lunch) and The Door Restaurant (dinner), in addition to drinks from sponsors Grace Meals and Pure Fountain Juices.
Grant stated OnCore Golf, the official event ball sponsor, was represented by Nasser Sutherland, who helped with the awards presentation.

Kyra Cox, a longtime Vincentian-American good friend of the Open and the present Metropolitan PGA Communications supervisor, additionally introduced awards.
Grant stated a spotlight of the occasion was “the nice and cozy welcome” from Danielle Brown, a Jamaican-born final-year medical pupil at UWI Mona Campus in Jamaica and AFUWI scholarship recipient, who personally greeted members and shared her story.
She supplied heartfelt due to George Crooks, principal of Jammins Occasions, whose sponsorship has helped make her training doable.
Grant stated former US Ambassador to Jamaica Nick Perry, his spouse, Joyce, and AFUWI Board member and Govt Director at Morgan Stanley, Wayne Melbourne, Esq., have been among the many keen members within the board video games.
