NORTH MIAMI – Assertion from Mayor Alix Desulme on the Termination of Short-term Protected Standing (TPS):
As Mayor of North Miami and as a proud son of Haiti, I’m deeply upset by right now’s resolution to finish Short-term Protected Standing (TPS) for Haitian nationals.
This coverage shift will upend the lives of hundreds of Haitian families throughout the nation, lots of whom have lived, labored, and contributed to communities like ours for over a decade. Right here in North Miami, they don’t seem to be simply residents, they’re neighbors, dad and mom, enterprise homeowners, and church members. Their presence strengthens the very soul of our metropolis.
Whereas federal officers declare Haiti is now protected, we all know the reality: widespread violence, displacement, and financial hardship proceed to devastate the nation. Even the State Division nonetheless warns in opposition to travel to Haiti because of ongoing threats.
And but, on this second of uncertainty, I need our Haitian neighborhood to know that North Miami stands with you. We are going to proceed to advocate for equity, for dignity, and for the essential human proper to really feel protected. I encourage anybody affected by this resolution to hunt authorized steering from trusted sources and know your rights.
To our leaders in Washington: I urge you to rethink. Insurance policies should replicate the lived realities of the individuals they have an effect on. Compassion and customary sense should information our response, not politics.
In Unity,
Mayor Alix Desulme
Metropolis of North Miami
