    Psi Lambda Omega (PLO), the Brooklyn chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA), says that the Brooklyn Borough Corridor constructing was illuminated in pink and inexperienced on Jan. 15 in commemoration of the sorority’s 117th Founders’ Day.

    Natiesha Evans, PLO’s public relations officer, instructed Caribbean Life on Wednesday that members of her chapter, accompanied by sorority sisters all through New York Metropolis, “got here collectively to have fun 117 years of service to all mankind.” 

    She stated the celebration was made attainable by means of partnership with Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and his deputy, the Rev. Dr. Kimberly Council, who can be a PLO member.  

    Evans stated AKA is the primary African-American sorority based in america. 

    “It was based on the campus of Historic Black College, Howard College in Washington D.C., on Jan. 15, 1908, by 9 younger ladies,” she stated. 

    “The sorority credit these ladies for laying the muse for what’s immediately the oldest Greek-lettered group established by Black college-educated ladies,” Evans added. 

    She stated over 360,000 members have been initiated in graduate and undergraduate chapters internationally, “and are dedicated to service, social change, scholarship and sisterhood.” 

    At the moment, the group is led by Worldwide President and Chief Government Officer Danette Anthony Reid of Dallas, Tx. 

    “The Borough President, Antonio Reynoso, was so gracious and fantastic in highlighting our group’s anniversary of 117 years,” Evans stated. 

    Brooklyn Supreme Court docket Justice Lisa Ottley, a PLO member, whose father hailed from Trinidad and Tobago, instructed Caribbean Life that “celebrating with the attractive ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., on our 117th Founders’ Day Celebration is particular.

    “It jogs my memory of how superior this sisterhood of educated ladies continues to solidify the objectives and objective of our auspicious group,” she stated. 

    “As a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Psi Lambda Omega Chapter, (Brooklyn), the place I at present function the Requirements Committee chairperson, I together with my sorority sisters share our skills and provides again to the group,” Justice Ottley added. “We salute BP Antonio Reynoso and our Deputy BP, Rev.     PLO Chapter President Dr. Thomasena Ellison Clarke, a doctor by coaching, additionally instructed Caribbean Life that, “The ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. are brokers of change who’ve been doing the work of offering obligatory applications and companies for 117 years.  

    “We are going to proceed to press ahead in these difficult occasions with a steadfast dedication to be of service to all mankind,” she assured. “We admire the Borough President Antonio Reynoso for recognizing us on this special occasion.”

    Reynoso described AKA’s work in Brooklyn as “unmatchable”.  

    “As Borough President, I wished to point out love the Brooklyn means by celebrating Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s 117 years of service, by lighting up Borough Corridor in pink and inexperienced,” he instructed Caribbean Life. 

    “It’s an honor to acknowledge the Deputy Borough President, Rev. Kimberly Council, who has achieved greatness, but stays humble,” he added. “However most of all, she is a Brooklynite and one in all us, who is part of this nice group. 

    “I like to finish with a quote from Biggie Smalls: ‘Unfold love the Brooklyn means!’” Reynoso continued.  

    Rev. Council stated: “117 years in the past, a gaggle of younger ladies gathered at Howard College to help one another and uplift our group. At the moment, we proceed that legacy of Sisterhood and Service. 

    “I’m extremely blessed to work alongside Borough President Reynoso, who leads by means of a lens of fairness,” she stated. “I’m additionally grateful that he has acknowledged the various contributions that the native chapters Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. have made to Brooklyn.”
