The calypso neighborhood in Toronto and past is mourning the lack of Dennis James, a beloved performer recognized for his highly effective tenor voice, impeccable type, and aggressive spirit. Born on January 18, 1947, in St. Lucia, Dennis handed away on December 6, 2024.
Dennis James, the eighth of ten siblings, was the son of Lawrence and Adriana James. He’s survived by his sister, Joan James of Canada, and his brothers, Horace “Timboop” James of St. Lucia and Robert James of the UK.
From a younger age, Dennis displayed a deep ardour for music. Rising up within the CDC Blocks X and FS in St. Lucia, he started singing professionally in his early 20s. In 1971, he moved to New York, and in 1974, he married Mildred “Gizel” Douglas James. Two years later, the couple settled in Montreal, the place they raised their three youngsters: Dennis James Jr., Kimberly James, and Devaughn James. He additionally leaves behind seven grandchildren: Kyerra, Devante, Tameyah, Isaiah, Taijah, Diyari, and Miguel.
Dennis James carved out a long-lasting legacy within the Canadian calypso scene. Recognized for his quiet however fierce aggressive nature, he gained the celebrated OCPA Calypso Monarch Competitors thrice. Dennis’s passing brings a bittersweet mixture of sorrow and reduction, as his family and friends are comforted by the truth that his departure was not marked by extended struggling.
Dennis now joins a distinguished group of late Canadian calypso legends, together with John “Jayson” Perez, Kent “Love Man” Service provider, Dick “The Juiceman” Lochan, Elsworth James, Kurt “KB” Barker, Fonzworth “The Fonz” Lovelace, Peter “Lord Sailor” Stafford, and Cleve “Lord Smokey” Henry.
