Assertion by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the passing of Sir Shridath
“It’s with unhappiness that I realized of the passing of Sir Shridath Ramphal, former Secretary-Common of the Commonwealth of Nations.
“Born in Guyana, Sir Ramphal was a politician and diplomat who devoted his life to advancing human rights and social justice internationally. He was an ideal advocate for the equality and prosperity of all nations – massive or small, developed or creating – on the world stage.
“Sir Ramphal was the longest-serving Secretary-Common of the Commonwealth, from 1975 to 1990. On this position, he guided the group by a few of its most transformative years. Most notably, Sir Ramphal can be remembered for spearheading the Commonwealth’s anti-apartheid efforts in South Africa – a testomony to his unwavering dedication to human rights.
“A believer within the energy of schooling as a drive for good, it’s no shock that the British Columbia-based Commonwealth of Studying was created throughout his tenure, making high-quality schooling obtainable throughout the Commonwealth.
“On behalf of all Canadians, I provide my deepest condolences to Sir Ramphal’s household, buddies, and people near him. As we be part of our companions within the Caribbean and the Commonwealth in mourning this nice loss, could we honour him by reaffirming the values of justice, peace, and equality that he stood for.”
