It’s a practice as outdated because the Congress of Black Ladies of Canada (CBWC), which was based in 1951 because the Canadian Negro Ladies’s Affiliation (CANEWA).
The custom is the awarding of educational scholarships to assist Black youngsters pursue post-secondary research.
“The awarding of scholarships was one of many predominant causes for which the unique group, CANEWA, began. It was the first goal, with the primary scholarship awarded in 1951,” Loris Thomas, CBWC’s Regional President, advised The Caribbean Digital camera.
She made the remark after the presentation of 2024 CBWC Ontario Area scholarships to 4 college students, who had been headed to school after graduating from excessive colleges in Markham.

The 4 – every the recipient of a money grant of $1,000 – embody Monique Monplaisir and Yasmin Givan, who each attended Invoice Crothers Secondary College.
The opposite scholarship recipients had been Keldon James, a graduate of St Augustine Catholic Secondary College, and former Pierre Elliott Trudeau Secondary College scholar Chad Dume.

Dume and Givan are actually each learning life sciences on the College of Toronto.
Monplaisir and James have chosen kinesiology as their profession choices. Monplaisir is a scholar at Western College and James is at York College.
“Since 1973, Congress of Black Ladies has been awarding scholarships yearly. CBWC noticed the necessity to award scholarships to deserving Black youth to make sure that they’re educated and skilled to compete for work,” Thomas mentioned.
“This give attention to training continues as a major goal for Congress of Black Ladies at the moment,” she added.

“Congress of Black Ladies Ontario congratulates all college students, from kindergarten to college, and need you a profitable 2024-2025 faculty 12 months.”
CBWC, a non-profit group, contains eight chapters, which all award scholarships as a part of their companies.
The Markham chapter is the youngest of the eight, becoming a member of others in Ajax/Pickering, Oshawa/Whiby, Scarborough, Mississauga, Brampton, London and Waterloo.
“Markham is a brand new chapter and the group continues a name out about for members to handle this chapter,” Thomas mentioned.
