In a major transfer towards safeguarding marine biodiversity, The Bahamas has formally signed the United Nations Conference on Regulation of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Organic Variety of Areas Past Nationwide Jurisdiction (BBNJ Settlement).
Stan Smith, the Everlasting Consultant of The Bahamas to the United Nations, inked the settlement on Friday on the Treaty Part of the United Nations in New York, marking a pivotal second for the island nation.
Strengthening international initiatives
The Ministry of Overseas Affairs emphasised that this signature underscores The Bahamas’ steadfast dedication to preserving the world’s oceans, acknowledged because the frequent heritage of humanity.
The BBNJ settlement, which encompasses two-thirds of the globe’s oceanic expanse, goals to advance the conservation and sustainable utilization of marine biodiversity.
A multifaceted method
Integral elements of the settlement embody establishing frameworks for equitable sharing of oceanic sources and advantages, fostering capacity-building endeavors, and facilitating the switch of marine expertise.

Notably, there’s a pronounced emphasis on supporting coastal, low-lying, and small island growing states.
The Bahamas highlighted that its endorsement of the settlement, crafted with contributions from CARICOM Member States, underscores its lively involvement within the international implementation of the BBJ Settlement.
