    NYC public advocate celebrates Grenada’s 50th Independence Anniversary – Caribbean Life

    New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams final Wednesday celebrated Grenada’s 50th anniversary of political independence from Nice Britain, saying that he was “the proud son of Grenadian immigrants.”

    “I wish to want a Joyful fiftieth Independence Anniversary to all who share heritage from Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique,” Williams, who and his household had trekked to Grenada to the Golden Jubilee celebrations. “I’m perpetually happy with and formed by my roots and the time I’ve spent on the “Isle of Spice,” and proud to hitch within the Golden Jubilee celebrations.

    “In my work in New York Metropolis, dwelling to tens of hundreds of Grenadians, I rejoice and uplift the methods during which Grenadian tradition has formed our communities, and attempt to honor the proud historical past of the island in my work for justice, fairness, and liberty,” he added. “We rejoice these values in the present day, as we’ve all through 5 many years of independence, and look to the promising future.”

    Following a Particular Joint Sitting of the Grenada Parliament on Tuesday, Feb. 6 the general public advocate met with native dignitaries and offered Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell with a proclamation.

    Williams informed Caribbean Life that becoming a member of the celebrations and festivities on this jubilant time was “deeply resonant.”

    On the island, he mentioned he was in a position to see Grenada’s historical past and current, and appears to “its future, via sights, sounds, and charming cultural celebrations.”

    He mentioned “the fantastic thing about the island and its folks, the unity and delight, reverberated all through” his time in Grenada.

    In presenting the proclamation to the prime minister, Williams mentioned it “acknowledges him for his work in authorities, advocacy, management, dedication, and as a person worthy of our highest respect and esteem.”
